| Community
Based Rehabilitation Services for Persons with Disabilities
OUR
PHILOSOPHY
- All persons with disabilities
should be recognized as citizens and should be accorded all rights
extended to other citizens.
- Persons with disabilities
must have the equal opportunity to participate in the social and
economic life of the community.
- Persons with disabilities
must have access to supports and resources to enable them to participate.
- The goal of this process
is to create a warm, loving environment within their homes and
communities.
OUR
HISTORY
3D Projects grew out
of the Early Stimulation Project launched in 1978. This progressed
through a parent training programme in 1983-84, to the formation
of a strong parent association, The St. Catherine Parent Association
for Disabled Persons, which sponsored 3D Projects. 3D is now a registered
non-profit company under The Companies Act.
OUR
SYMBOL
Our name -3D- represents
our goal: 'Dedicated to the Development of Persons with Disabilities'.
3D represents the three major areas of disability- sensory, learning,
and motor- and three crucial areas of rehabilitation: social, educational
and economic.
3D Projects is Jamaica's
first fully established community based rehabilitiation programme.
Based in the parish of St. Catherine, we have a network of rural
community groups comprising parents of disabled children and disabled
persons in the parishes of Manchester, St. Thomas, St. Mary and
Portland.
OUR
PROGRAMME
- Provides community
based rehabilitation (CBR) services for persons with disabilities
requiring the following:
a) home training programmes
b) counseling
c) educational placements
d) job placement or employment development
- Provides advocacy
for persons with disabilities and their families in obtaining
community services in the areas stated in #1.
- Develops parent associations
and leadership for the purposes of solidarity, advocacy, and parent
mutual support.
- Generates sources
of income for the services being provided, by fundraising and
income generation projects.
- Trains people in the
community in many aspects of inclusion.
WE
BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES DO NOT NEED TO BE HANDICAPPED!
If their families have
access to simple, basic skills and low-cost equipment, and if the
family members appreciate their abilities and learn to understand
them, most children and adults with disabilities can become productive
people, taking an active part in the life of the community.
Even when a person is
too severely disabled to benefit from rehabilitation, he or she
can still be valued, and family members can gain self-esteem and
satisfaction by helping other families with similar challenges.
A
PUBLIC APPEAL
